The Soft Skill of the Month

Yough School District kicked off the 2016-17 school year with it's Career Awareness Initiative.  Part of the initiative is to bring awareness to the top Soft Skills employers look for in their employees.  What better way to prepare the future work force by introducing & reinforcing Soft Skills while they're in school?

The soft skill for the Month of February is Problem-Solving.

Problem solving and critical thinking refers to the ability to use knowledge, facts, and data to effectively solve problems. This doesn’t mean you need to have an immediate answer, it means you have to be able to think on your feet, assess problems and find solutions. The ability to develop a well thought out solution within a reasonable time frame, however, is a skill that employers value greatly.

Employers say they need a workforce fully equipped with skills beyond the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic to grow their businesses. These skills include critical thinking and problem solving, according to a 2010 Critical Skills Survey by the American Management Association and others.

LOOKING FOR A PRE-K PROGRAM FOR YOUR CHILD?  TRY THE YOUGH H.S. PRESCHOOL PROGRAM

The Yough Senior High School Family and Consumer Sciences Department in conjunction with the Child Development class, will be conducting our annual preschool learning lab for age 3 to 4-1/2 year olds. The preschool learning lab will start in late February and run through mid-May.

Space is limited and children must be potty trained, have their own transportation to and from the high school and attend regularly. The preschool learning lab is conducted on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The session will start at approximately 9:20 to 10:35am.

There is a procedure for admittance into the learning lab: 1.) The child must meet the above criteria. 2.) A pre-registration form must be completed and returned to the Yough High School to Mrs. Jenkins ASAP. A pre-registration form can be requested and obtained thru the Family and Consumer Sciences Department at the Yough Sr. High School at jenkinsh@youghsd.net  3.) After the pre-registration form is turned in the department will conduct a screening to see which children would be a good fit to the program.

Junior and Senior high school students will be in charge of the lessons and activities for the preschool children, which are overseen by Mrs. Jenkins. Please note since the high school students are not professionals and it is a learning lab not every child would benefit from the program. The preschool learning lab is exempt by the Department of Welfare. Once accepted into the program you will be contacted by email, in late January/ early February. A small donation is asked by each family for the semester once the child is enrolled. This is applied towards supplies for the learning lab. For more information please contact Mrs. Jenkins at the Yough Sr. High school. (Contact by email is preferred and is quicker.) jenkinsh@youghsd.net or 724-446-5520 extentions. 72102 0r 72104.
